Sunset from Clingman's Dome

This is a print of an absolutely stunning sunset over the Great Smoky Mountains from Clingman's Dome.

The story behind the photo:

On October 29th of 2023, I had a spontaneous urge to drive up to the Smoky Mountains which was so wild because I was in the middle of driving 2 hours home from a trip and the Smoky Mountains are another hour north of my house. I guess I really wanted to see and take pictures of the fall leaves there before they were gone. 

I stopped at my house long enough to change clothes, print out a parking pass and then I took off by myself. I planned to go to Clingman’s Dome and along the way I got majorly distracted…. The elk were in Cherokee so I watched them from my car for about an hour. Then I made several stops along the way to take pictures of the mountains and the leaves, but these pictures just weren’t hitting with me for some reason. I tried to time the trip just right to where I would get to Clingman‘s Dome right before sunset but I almost missed it altogether, thanks to all my distractions! When I finally got there, I was in awe. The sun was just slightly higher than it is in this picture and for my first time there, it was incredible. The mountains were a perfect gradient of blue and the sun was that deep orange color. Luckily, there were no clouds to block any of the view either. Speaking of the view, if you’ve never been to Clingman’s Dome, just know that you’re up in the air just enough to be above the trees and from there, it’s a 360° view of the mountains.

Anyways, it was just perfect and it’s funny because I thought I would come back home with the prettiest leaf and mountain pictures, but instead I got the best sunset picture I’ve ever taken. Always take the spontaneous trips because they make for the best memories and all of them so far have given me some of my favorite pictures!! If God is telling you to go then go, it’s for a reason!
